→ ULTIMATE RebootNation Anti-PMO Software Collection!!!
« on: November 18, 2015, 09:34:02 AM »
Hey guys!

First things first, English is not my first language so I apologize for any linguistic mistake  :P
Of course no blocking software can replace your willpower while rebooting but for me they often prevented me from relapsing.
It's a lot easier when you know you can't access P immediately and disabling all the softwares and filters would take hours.
Also they help me keep my mind pornfree by removing temptation and triggers.
I would recommend to everyone of you to have Anti-PMO software on every device you are using - the more the merrier.

There are so many different softwares out there and from my personal experience I know that a lot of them are garbage.
That's why I need your help guys!  ;)  I want to create a collection of software for PC and Smartphone that works good, that is impossible or very time-consuming to disable and that we can recommend to every newbie who decides to quit PMO!

Just tell me what kind of software you are using and why it works for you and I will make a list! :)

From my point of view it's best to use many softwares that work in a different way so that they don't interfere with each other:

First you need softwares that block pornographic and adult content:
I guess most of you use K9 Web Protection which works great and is a must-have!
OpenDNS Family Shield is also great because it filters the content via DNS!
Also I use a Firefox Add-on called Procon Latte Content Filter that has a brilliant redirecting function!

You also need something to avoid triggers:
You need an adblocker like AdBlock Plus to block ads that show arousing content!
You need something that enforces SafeSearch to prevent you from searching for P subs!
And I heard there are intelligent softwares that can block images that show a lot of skin but I haven't found anything that works yet.
Maybe you guys know something that blocks visual triggers

And finally there are also softwares for time management, motivation and other stuff that might help for rebooting but I haven't tested any yet.

Whatever it is that helps you, feel free to tell me :)

Hey i'm looking for a good blocker/filter app for my phone. K9 has more bad reviews than good. Does it actually work?

Yeah k9 for mobile phone is not working for my Android device and other softwares like net nanny aren't working smoothly but i heard its different for anybody! I recommend you apply the OpenDNS family shield! Also I'm currently using the Kids Safe Browser by kiddoware which blocks great and is totally ok for everyday use. It's not for free but you can test it for 30 days! If you like it you can purchase a license (or get one for free in the internet :-X)!

Software is not the answer..  An addict will ALWAYS (always, always) find a way around it until they have committedto truly change..

Yeah of course software is not the answer but it does really help! Todays Internet can deliver you porn in 2 seconds.
It's like being an alcohol addict working as a bartender surrounded by all kinds of alcoholic drinks and all for free!

But i totally agree with you. If you don't have the right attitude no software in the world can save you!

Before i used porn blocking software I relapsed every 2 days because everytime I felt temptation I got weak! Now I am at DAY 33 and I can really feel the urges get weaker. The urges are usually coming in waves and when disabling all your softwares takes hours they are often already gone before you can look up porn. Also removing triggers helped me a lot. Out of my sight - out of mind! ;)

Hey, congrats on your 33 days TheArchitect! I think removing triggers helped me a lot too.

Here is how I got image triggers out of my Google Chrome. Sadly it is not "intelligent"... takes some work to unblock specific sites :(. Also, it is very easy to undo so this, so it can only help avoid triggers (does not help with urges). But it is enough for me! Hope it could be useful for somebody. ;D

We really need a good set of instructions with screenshots! But here's my best for now:
  • Click the icon on the left of the URL bar (left of www.rebootnation.org at the top of the browser window)
  • click "Site Settings" at the bottom
  • click radio button "Do not show any images", then click "Done"
Now images are blocked absolutely everywhere. However, when you visit a site, there will be an image icon on the right side of the url bar with a red X on it. if you click that, you can permanently unblock images just for that site.

You can unblock RebootNation, for example. No P subs here ;D. Also, some web sites do not work well without images, so you will have to enable them there.

If you unblock a site, you can easily "reblock" it by clicking on the URL bar icon.

Another big enemy for me is Google Images! 95% of my image searches were porn stars and the other 5% were stuff that i didn't really need! ;D

So I blocked any search engine apart from Google enforced safesearch and disabled the image search:
All you have to do is add tbm=isch to the blacklist of your blocking software. Like that Google search still works but without images! I did that in Procon Latte Firefox Add-on and redirected it to a blank space so that everytime you hit that Images button nothing will happen!

If you use chrome you can do what CrazyGopher wrote above!

Yes.You're right guys, adict always find a way to cheat the system...I'm a good example of that. But anyway on the topic:
SO what kind of softwere do I have?
I use K9 and it's good for laptop, I do not use porn on my laptop anymore (not directly) I cannot use torrents or sometimes I even blocked any stream, which helped to avoid any streaming web-site (on-line movies, tv-shows etc..) but I realized it was too harsh on me)) so, I did like that: enabled  filtering of search, added some some key-words block, blocked some key web sites, and of course blocked any porn, erotic, adult content;
Also I use  Cold Turkey pro, it is good to adjust your laptop for "work time" and "leisure", also you can block some "stream" sites, if you watch too much tv-shows, or if you know some other time-wasting resourses. But you need to disable administrator opportunity to change time (in this program you do not need the password) you just can adjust a schedule for different sites or apps on PC and disable oportunity to change anything for some period of time.
Smartphone is the hardest thing to control
I had so many different things to block properly my smartphone and I failed so far.. I found so many different ways to use Smartphone to watch porn, that you cannot even imagine...this is crazy...
but having my experience, I can help others probably))) So there is a good program SecureTeen, it is also not free, just 30 days is free, but I was so committed to stop watching porn, that bought Pro license for 1 year... So this softwere is good actually, you download it on your phone, go on web-site of the program, adjust the rules on the web site, and it works on your phone...BUT...
You need to block your internall browser in the phone (you can do it on the web page of SecureTenn - apps block feature)... Use only Google Chrome browser, you should block all others...also block your Play Market... That was my mistake, I was blocking different apps, but just realised (after yesterday's relapse) that it's better to block Play Market and that's all...You will cut all potential ways to cheat the phone)))
Much Love)) Good Luck))

Everything went so fast and now 5 minutes later i can't believe what just happened! It's terrible!! I guess the only way to fight this is hard abstinence from the Internet for the next weeks! :-[

I've been using an app called mobile fence on my android. It is free and you can use it to filter or block apps completely or a combination of the two. You can also put time limits on internet usage or set it up where you can only use certain apps at certain times.
I set mine to block bing as that was where i did my searching. And i set it to allow this site and artofmanliness.
I registered using my brother's email address and gave him the password so i have to go to him to remove/alter the filter.

As I look at your counter I see you're on Day 5... You were at 33 and found a way around the filter..

Filter are not the answer.. you found a way around it..

An addict needs to stop kidding themselves and make a change... Filters may be fun to evaluate and discuss.. but we need to take control of the addiction and stop kidding ourselves and realize the change COMES FROM WITHIN.

I haven't yet read through each of the replies but in my skimming I didn't see this mentioned. I use an app called Covenant Eyes. It can be used on the computer and phones, on Android phones it doesn't have a filter option yet though. It does monitor EVERYTHING that is done though, and sends daily reports to whoever you choose to be accountable to. My husband has it set up to send everything to me. It will also send an email to the accountability partner immediately if it's removed, so no just removing it and no one knowing about it. True he can still access porn but he can't be sneaky about it, at least not on the computer and his phone anyway. It's not perfect, but it's a start.

I also use a program called Incognito Gone. It permanently disables incognito and private browsing in IE, Chrome, Firefox, and another one (Safari, I think). I used it on Windows 7 and it works great. I haven't tried it with other operating systems yet. Again, not a filter but a good way to make it a little harder to hide at least.

Yeah I had to realize that you were totally right. I even was at Day 39 and I felt like nothing in the world could make me relapse. Then I accidentaly found a way how to bypass my filters and everything went so quick. It felt like I had no control over myself... like I was thinking about nothing and actually a lot time after that I realized what I've done.  Now after the relapse I'm feeling awful! I thought I could easily get to 39 again but in the last week I relapsed multiple times. My willpower seems to be at zero. Is that the so-called chaser effect?

Thanks Merghana that sounds very effective.
There are a few posts on here from people saying that filters are not the answer and those people are correct. However, none of us who have posted here believe software is The answer but merely one piece of an effective operation to rid P from our lives. Just because it is not the cure doesn't mean it can't be a useful tool for us.

I've been going at this for almost 5 months now, and I've failed miserably every time.
But I recently (as in this past couple of days) have realised that there's really only one way to prevent yourself from being able to access porn. It's difficult, and you're not going to like it... you need to get rid of your devices. Get rid of your tablet, laptop, your desktop if you have to (or at least move it into a public family room), get rid of your smartphone and replace it with a standard (non internet-accessing) phone. It's what I've done. The only access I currently have to the internet is limited access to my laptop (which I keep in my mum's room most of the time), and I only use it to access this and similar websites.

You don't have to permanently get rid of your devices, just for the duration of your reboot, and until you KNOW you can completely trust yourself not to "use" again.

Honestly, I find it strangely satisfying to get the urges/temptations to relapse, only to know that I have no way of doing so. It really does work and it'll make you feel loads better as well, knowing that you don't even have to fight the battle any more (or most of it anyway) because it's impossible for you to relapse.

Up until now, I made excuses to not get rid of my devices, like "But I need it for x, y and z", but think to yourself, are these things really worth your addiction? Don't you hate your addiction more than you desire to have the convenience of your devices? If not, then you should probably question if you're really committed to beating this.

That's my view from experience of constantly failing whilst ever I had access to the internet and was relying on sheer willpower alone anyway. Take it for what it is.

For the past year, I've been using a program called accountable2you. My wife is set up as my accountability partner, and she gets a message about ANYTHING suspicious that I do on any of my devices. It works amazingly well to keep me honest, but does not block anything, so I need to rely on my own willpower. However I still have the problem where when I find other ways to get online, like using someone else's phone, I binge. No app is perfect, but this has helped me a lot in the last year. It is 4.99 a month.
