So far, I haven't met any others here who are struggling with erotica addiction. Anyone else in that boat?

Is that still considered porn? I'm giving up porn and masturbation for 90 days (on day 25) so I haven't been reading any as I would naturally masturbate with it. I would probably read it when I could masturbate again though. Is that harmful as well?

It depends on who you ask. Merriam Webster Dictionary defines pornography as "material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement", so yes, I consider erotica to be porn.

I'm not sure exactly what the difference is between written porn and visual porn in how it affects us, but I have heard that erotica can be harmful. Even if erotica wasn't harmful in itself, addiction certainly isn't healthy. I would expect that erotica would affect the brain much the same way as porn does though.

Not a woman but erotica makes up over half of my addiction. The short answer is Yes. Emphatically so. Remember that this is about the reprogramming of our Dopamine receptors in sexual stimulus. Erotica is a very powerful stimulus because, unlike visual porn, everyone in the story is perfect through the eyes of your addiction.
I found that as my addiction has progressed over the years, my ability to fantasize without the erotica decreased while my search for more "interesting" (read extreme) stories increased. I eventually found myself reading stories about situations that previously would have repulsed me. Suddenly (in actuality over time but I didn't recognize it) I was craving stuff way out of my wheel house because it was the only material that would excite me and get the Dopamine flowing.
Hope this helps,
R

Thanks for your reply R! I've had the same experience in craving more extreme things over time. And I definitely agree erotica seems to be as powerful or more so than visual material.

Yes, erotica, hentai, even romance novels can turn me on. I'd search for sex stories online and use vibrators.  It has killed my ability to orgasm with my boyfriend and even alone. I've been off all porn and erotica for over a month, but still have trouble stopping my fantasies. I am really trying to be turned on by my boyfriend again. I think I'm getting better.

Hey. Yes I did from a very young age. Fanfiction was my poisen and as soon as I found out my parents didnt know it was "naughty" stuff I was on it every day after school and sometimes stayed home from school to read it. To be perfectly honest I was more hooked on erotica than porn. I would read and MO and go to look at pictures and it wouldnt make me feel the same way so back to fanfiction. I believe erotica was what really hooked me to all the ellicit stuff too cos I never "watched" porn. But I read everything. Because stories are only in the mind. It deffinatly changed my views in real life.

I'm a guy, am also big on erotica/text-based porn games.  Honestly I always found erotica way more stimulating than videos or pics.

To add on to what others have said, I wonder if erotica isn't the worse kind of porn in regards to how it effects us, because literature messes with our imagination more directly than just visual and audio stimuli can.  Videos tend to be repetitive and and simple.  It's also immediate, so if something disgusts us about a video we tend to quickly click off of it.  Words, however, are seemingly more innocuous, so it leads us gradually slip more and more into more extreme fantasies without offending us as much as videos, and therefore probably lead to increased insensitivity.

I'm on day five right now, and I'm not even thinking about the fantasies or stories I've read.  I know they'll arouse me and I want to only be aroused by the real thing.

That's just a thought.

Yes even my wife has faced difficulty in getting sexual aroused. She was diagnosed with what was called as female sexual dysfunction. She was very much stressed due to work pressure at her work place which was causing sexual arousal issues. So she started exercising on regular basis and followed healthy lifestyle habits which improved her sexual desire and made her feel erotic.

My problem with erotica is that it will lead back into porn. Trying to quit porn I cannot allow myself any fantasizing or masturbation or I will go back into porn. This is how dopamine works for me.
