Rebooting when you have other addictions

So for me, porn is by far my worst addicition. It affects me the worst. It makes me feel the worst. It is the one I am most ashamed of. But I am also dealing with some other addictions (video games, internet and possibly a slight problem with food). So, how do I go about handling the porn addiction without making the others worse?  I?m afraid if I tackle all if them at once that I will fail at all of them.  Some of the work I do on the porn addiction will roll over onto the others. So if I work on processing my emotions, I will be less likely to overeat when I am not hungry.  Has anyone had a few addictions at once and how did you deal with the ?

Don't overload yourself with all tasks at once. First conquer your PMO addiction, you can worry about the rest. I used to be a videogamer (global elite cs:go :-X) but I noticed that during the last three weeks, I didn't feel the need to game anymore. It just came naturally, it's pretty weird. Oh, and I overate a few times during my reboot, but you know, that's just the body/brain wanting to have quick dopamine fix. But overeating once a while is far better than going on a PMO binge or so. So, as I said, don't try to battle all problems at once. Be patient with yourself and no negative self talk!

Thank you for your reply. I was kind of thinking I should just focus in this one and leave the others till later. And I agree, overeating or binging on a video game is much better than breaking my streak. Thank you for your encouragement!

I agree both with your intuition and what Pete says, except keep an eye out for how one leads to another, or triggers another.

If you're playing a video game with risque content and your porn tastes happen to be of the animated/computer sort, then the video games are a trigger to porn for you, and you'll find it harder to quit one and not the other.  Things like alcohol or pot can be the proper pre-requisite to a porn session, or put a person into a state of mind where they're wallowing and prone to relapsing.  You're going to have to figure it out bit by bit.

(those are just examples, I know they don't necessarily apply to you)

Thank you, DoneAtLast, good point about how one leads to another. So far I have found that if I just do not look at the ads, then I avoid the triggers from them. One of my issues in the past has been when I am already ?looking for? things, I will intentionally look at the ads as an in between step to the porn. The games themselves usually don?t have triggers. And when I am not playing a game or online (and online has a ton of triggers and ads) then I am watching tv and I have found that certain shows I just cannot watch. They might be 99% fine. But that 1% sets me off.  And my default when I am stressed or trying to avoid the other addictions is to eat...junk food...when I am not hungry. But working in figuring out how they all link together.

I wonder if, buried somewhere in your settings, you can set some ad parameters, like only for games rated E or T, and no MA games or something.  I have to tweak youtube occasionally, because they will show me some pretty click baity stuff; I'm not a big gamer, but do follow retro markets and so forth, and youtube knows this and gives me ads as well.  I don't know how the ones within games work.

Sometimes we need to go G rated during a reboot.  It doesn't mean you say goodbye to it forever, but taking a break can be better than white knuckling, and if the stuff isn't porn in and of itself, the trigger potential can fade with time.

I am on Day 3 of no PMO. I have recently started reducing my drinking (I am on the cusp of being a highly functioning alcoholic), and I quit smoking 13 weeks ago.

Quitting smoking was difficult. Making it this far has given me some confidence in tackling alcohol and P.

I also can overeat. I will relate one experience I had last summer, but I would highly recommend talking to a health professional if you decide to explore this route.

This past August, I did a 4 day fast. Water only. Well, coffee - the headaches were too intense the second day, and since black coffee has no calories, it did not affect the health benefits of the fast, and the ketosis that ensues.

There were too unexpected results of the fast. Losing weight was expected, and I also expected to put it back on over the next few months, which I did.

What was unexpected, was the ATTITUDE of GRATITUDE I had when I ate my first bite on Day 5 (a fig from my garden). I had an epiphany that happiness and gratitude are indelibly intertwined, and this was a very powerful realization.

The second was that I ate less compulsively after the fast. Much more thoughtfully. It took months before I found myself overeating late at night, mostly due to stress and (possibly) a loneliness in my soul (I am single now, but I have had this feeling even when in a relationship).

I am not recommending you try a fast, I am simply relating my experience to you. It was quite awful, those four days. You end up in a bit of a feverish sweat, as your body goes into ketosis, and starts burning your body fat. It feels like a flu, and indeed, there is a term like "ketosis flu" or "the fasting flu". So you need about a week to do it. Four days of fasting and doing nothing much (lying in bed a lot, like a flu), and then three to five days to recover, as you will be VERY low energy afterwards.

Good wishes.

I bet food tasted delicious after 4 Days, wow!  I went really low carb and definitely had those flu like symptoms..but could not tolerate it..never did improve. Impressive that you are quitting alcohol, smoking, and porn, good for you!
