When we prefer porn over real life adventures like hobbies or conversations

Hey Guys,

I am on 60+ days right now on my Nofap journey and I feel amazing to be here with all of you. I feel better each day that I wake up knowing that I did not give in to my urges last day and look forward to my days now. My self-image has been improving and so is my confidence. This (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-On247evw9o) is a video that  resonates a lot with my views on porn. Before discovering this forum, and before starting my journey, I would watch porn rather than going out with my friends and playing soccer, or just talking to them, I would say no to them when they'd invite me in the evenings to play, so that I could just sit in front of my computer and watch porn. I hate that part of my life and I'm glad it's over.

Just wanted to share this, let me know if you have similar experiences.

Cheers!

Hello friend,
Firstly, well done on an impressive 60 plus days of no porn! I bet you are reaping all the rewards that come with such a stretch of nofap.
AS for your comment, Jesus Christ YES! At my lowest depths of porn abuse I would find no joy in anything, even things that i had loved up until porn got its greasy hands around on me. I stopped hobbies and passions, shunned friends and family, even work! That was a fucked up time and place let me tell you. On occasions when I did go out and meet friends and familiy, I would scope out the nearest toilet (even in peoples homes!) in which to jack off in. When deciding on a place to meet I would consider if it would allow me to sneak off under the guise of "taking a massive shit" or whatever and thrash myself silly for a few minutes then return.
As you can see its classic junky behaviour, just because youre not smoking anything or shooting anything into your veins doesnt mean it isnt as damaging.
I think all of us here have similar experiences of ditching friends and giving up on hobbies for the sake of fapping.
Anyway, double your 60 day streak! Most of all, enjoy your second life.

Congrats on the 60+ days.  That is definitely something to be proud of.

My experiences were definitely similar.  I always thought of it like music.  If you go to a loud metal concert without ear protection, your ears will adjust (and damage) and you won't be able to hear much below the absurd volume levels.  As you leave, you and your friends have to yell everything at each other, because anything else sounds like a whisper.  Eventually you can hear softer things, you can converse in a normal tone, you can hear small, subtle noises, and maybe even listen to some Chopin instead of metal.

Porn is a bit like that.  It isn't necessarily a better or more pleasing high, but it is definitely the loudest.  It just drowns out everything else in life, even if those things are far more pleasurable.

My apologies to any big metal fans out there.  It is just a metaphor!

Hi, I can totally understand what you're saying. I have never gone that far into my indulgence but I do have my share of shitty things I did for replacing porn with real life event. Thanks for the motivation and I'd surely double my streak! I hope you all stay strong through this journey as well. We're gonna make it !!

Great metaphor. I've read how our dopamine receptors get messed up because of the big high porn gives us, no wonder we don't find anything in real life exciting anymore.

Exactly.  I think many approach it more that they need to try to get those other things in life to have as much of a dopamine rush as porn does, but that never works.  You're never going to practice the violin and get the same high.  Sometimes guys come close with exercise routines, but there is just no comparison to the high.

Fuck man, that hits home. I never thought about it but it is so true. Unless I am practicing with a piano accompaniment, violin practice is so boring and is only fun when we can actually play a piece well after lots of hardwork. And exercise comes very very close. i wonder if there's a scale to this stuff, how good you feel while doing a particular activity.

That's kinda funny - I use "violin practice" as an example all the time, I didn't realize you actually played violin!  Hopefully you don't think I'm stalking you and have all the inside information!

I just like it as an example because it is something that can be deeply satisfying, but comes in much slower, more measured doses over time.  Even if you practiced one piece for years, finally go on stage and completely nail it, I think only then would it be in the same ballpark as porn.  The things in life that are most satisfying are never the things that give the biggest hits of pleasure.  If that were true, then living off of candy bars and porn would put a person in a state of perpetual bliss.  We as addicts/former addicts have the privilege of knowing the truth to be otherwise.

I do think you're stalking me.  It's so obvious bro.

Yeah, it is a great example and I had never realized about this fact until you told me. Real life is indeed difficult and porn is a like using a cheat code, this explains why real life isn't that fun anymore once you leave porn. Fuck man, this was eye-opening. Yeah, we're privileged to know this.
