Any advice on why K9 fails sometimes? Any thoughts of additional blockers?

Hi RN,

K9 failed this afternoon. Does anybody have experience of K9 failing, or how to stop it? I have certain browsers and addresses (such as Bing etc...) blocked, but K9 seems to be inconsistent in blocking them... some days it blocks them and other days not. Last week it was was working great, not so this week.

And, if I might ask, does anybody have ideas whether using an additional blocker or, maybe one instead of K9, works better?

Thanks for any advice guys.

Thanks Big H. Yeah, my K9 has blocked sites I didn't want it to in the past, if that's what you mean? I entered the site names in the 'always allow' section of K9 in attempt to work this around, and be a bit more specific on the type of sites I block and allow.

My problem is that I put Bing and other browsers into 'always block', but K9 allowed me to use Bing yesterday which gave me the results that allowed PMO. Last time I used it, it blocked Bing. I wondered if anybody knew why K9 fails sometimes like this? And also if they use a different or another blocker (on top of K9) to make things real secure.

I just edit my hosts file. It blocks all sites until you undo your edit. You'll need administrator access to edit the file, and if you have this access, why not set the password to something really long and obnoxious? I did this and it has worked wonders. I can't visit any of the sites I used to frequent.

How to edit your hosts file

If I've gone into the mode which allows you to reach all websites (supervisor mode)... unless i clear my internet history/cookes etc I will sometimes be able to access the websites I did when I was in  supervisor mode. So try clearing your history (maybe also the logs on k9 aswell).

Hi BailHopper and Stevew,

BailHopper, Thanks very much man. I looked at editing my host file yesterday, if I need to use it in the future, I surely will. For now I've added a blocker/program called OpenDNS, and it's blocking sites that K9 wasn't.

Stevew, I cleared my cookies and history, plus the K9 logs, but the other sites were still not blocking. I've tried this before too, and it worked then, but not now! Strange. Thank you man  :)

I use pluckeye. It's free and it work by blocking all images and videos on the web. You can choose to allow certain websites and even set specific times to allow certain websites (for example I have youtube allowed only at certain times of day). It works with a delay you set, so any changes you make take however long you set your delay to come into effect (mine is two hours). Inconvenient? Yes. So is porn addiction. But it is also super effective if used correctly.

I did not know pluckeye but that seems amazing. I'm going to try it out!
