Got to Beat This

New Member
I am soon to be 62. I have M since I can remember. I have used porn for what seems like forever. Happily married for over 40 years. I question why I used P to begin with. I now want to rid myself of this addiction. I have stayed away from P and M for about a week now, and have to admit that this morning I came really close to a relapse already. Was having headaches, ED for many years and now stumbled on to this site and forum. I know and trust I can beat this but I was really weak this morning somehow through the grace of God was able to pull myself out of the desires.

Welcome to RN. I admire your courage. You will get out of this experiance what you put into it. I would suggest setting clear goals and educating yourself. Check out yourbrainonporn.com. If you have faith in a higher power. Now is the time to rely on it. Porn is sick and so are we but together we can rewire and recover. Remember, mind body spirit. You are not alone.

I am actually 5 days in on this Reboot after I carefully checked my calendar. Yesterday had some real temptations and I discovered my hardest trigger to overcome is plain old programming both on network television as well as the HBO's etc. Plain and simple scenes of intimacy seems to get the gears grinding in my head. Does this mean you give up television because seems today every program has a scene. Got through it and even watched a few movies with my wife today. Did fine. I am finding that only 5 days in I am feeling changes in my thought processes, in my determination to meet the goal of no less than 30 days then see where I go from there. Other activities, gym, and just changing my thought process seems to be a great help. Turning more to prayer and meditation walks outdoors seem to be a great deterrent. I know some refer to "higher power" for me that is God and my faith. Just plain feeling good today but very cautious. What scared me no morning wood. Unusual for me. Restless sleep for the past 3 days. Hopefully all will be getting better.

Got to, welcome, to the nation. You might as well get ready for a hell of a ride..you brain is going do crap to you, you can't imagine. Get ready. Youre brain is going to be missing that dopamine rush, just know what your going to be feeling is going to be totally normal. Stay tough. When you feel weak, come here. Porn is not ever an option.

Welcome, alot of helpful folks here...Might I recommend George Collins' book "Breaking the Cycle", which is a no-nonsense approach that might resonate with you as you tackle this. If you are a person of faith, I might also recommend "The Road Less Traveled" by Scott Peck...though I would read the Collins book first, it is more practical and will help with the existing compulsion. The Peck book will help if you want to think about this as the opportunity for greater personal development and growth.

Best of luck!

Glad to have you with us.
Don't be bummed out that the urge didn't completely go away at your walk.  THe fact is, it became manageable.  As you go on it will become more manageable.
Someon on this site recommended I take the Fortify program (fortify.org)  I learned a bit about getting through urges.  it is worth considering.  For $39 you get a lifetime membership.
NO matter what you decide about that, know that there is a wealth of information here and plenty of men who are rooting for you to find the freedom that you want.  Cheers to you.
