Why and what is right

So I have been fighting this path for a long time and I keep track of my days. As of today I am 34 days without porn and masterbation but I did jerk off but it wasn?t to porn. I almost feel defeated of my accomplishment of not watching porn but then I let myself down with jerking off. At what point would this feeling subside and I feel like I need to start fresh and start back at day 1 but my main goal is to get rid of porn. I feel like I shouldn?t get down on myself since I haven?t jerked off for 34 days I think I have past any habit that has formed. What are your opinions in regards to rebooting, do you count both looking at porn and masterbation or just porn?

Welcome, nbrek18.

I read repeatedly that forming a new habit takes about 3 months. So while congratulation is in place for your 34 day long streak, keep being vigilant.

Abstaining not only from P but any sexual stimulation has these major benefits:
- for some PMO addicts even O by M or real sex can trigger a ?chaser? effect and push them back to P, if they got aroused too soon into the recovery. If you go ?hard mode?, this risk is gone
- if you suffer from PIED, abstaining completely from arousing yourself, will definitely fix your dopamine receptors and neural pathways faster.

Other than that, it is completely up to you which approach makes more sense to you.

Hey man, welcome to the forum!

The counter differs from person to person, but most guys start off with a sort of hardmode reboot; absolutely no porn, no masturbation or orgasm for a set period of time. Mostly it's between 30 and 90 days.

I would suggest that you start to read some of the threads on here to see how people approach their addiction, what their pitfalls are and how they deal with them. You will also find that this is a highly supportive community.

That being said, i hope to read more of you soon!

Great job for coming on here man, it shows that you're committed to stopping your addiction.

Cheers

Hello nbrek18,

How have you been so far?

When I read your post earlier today, I noticed that our stories have many things in common. At the beginning of my first couple of trials, I was very determined, and stop PMO completely, but let musturbation still be an important part of my life. In the beginning, it was quite all right. I was jerking off with my... imagination (like I use to do when I was like, 15 or 16 yo): thinking of hot girls from work, etc. But at one point, I started to invite porn scenes I had seen in the past in my session of fapping. This led me to my first relapse.

I think you are your best counsellor on that matter. If you are doing M without any mental references to your old addict ways, I don't think it will be a nuisance for you. But be careful, we addicts are easily driven back to our old ways.

Safe journey bro!  :)
