Pressing Question About Dopamine Receptor

Okay, so I have read about how dopamine receptor is related to our ED. Basically, when we keep doing thing like watching porn which our brain deemed as a reward, it will produce dopamine and when we keep doing it, it results in ED as too much dopamine is created and it blinded the dopamine receptor so we will require more dopamine to get excited which is why more hardcore porn is needed.

Okay so my question is this: if we keep doing something that creates dopamine BUT NOTHING SEXUAL, will it still affect the process of our ED recovery? e.g. imagine that you are in a certain situation or position that make you feel great over and over again (but absolutely nothing sexual)

Would like to hear some opinion on this.

The way I understand this is that if you have something which elevates your dopamine levels, for example sky diving or taking cocaine, this effects different pathways in your brain. So, if I understand the science correctly, we would not be desensitising ourselves to normal sexual activities.

The other thing about porn is that there is no satiety mechanism. We can edge to porn for hours and hours, keeping the levels of dopamine elevated for extended periods. Once you complete a skydive then your adrenaline and dopamine would return to normal after a relatively short period. There is a limit to how much of a drug you take in one sitting (unless you want to kill yourself). So, neither of these activities elevate dopamine levels for the extended periods that porn use can. Also, taking cocaine or skydiving are activities which repeat the same kind of hit over and over again.

It's important to remember that PIED only seemed to become prevalent with the inception of high speed internet porn sites and tube sites in particular. This is why porn users will escalate their use and search for more extreme or shocking material. When we become accustomed to a particular genre of porn we often look for something shocking because that releases more dopamine. If you watch the same kind of porn over and over again it becomes boring. This is a classic sign of desensitisation.

For this reason it's difficult to compare the reward we get from porn to the rewards we get from other activities like eating chocolate or skiing. However, there seems to be some suggestion that artificial stimuli, like playing video games, can have a negative effect on PIED recovery. I think this is because we need contact with real people in order to rewire our reward circuits and playing computer games doesn't provide this stimulus.

Hopefully, somebody with a better understanding will read this and correct any mistakes I've made.

I am asking this because I always listen to music and become so into it that I will create a scenario in my mind that make me feel so great and will do it over and over again. Although nothing sexual, it is still feeding your brain with constant dosage of dopamine so I am not sure will it damage. But it was nothing hardcore though, maybe just one or two round per night not like from day to night.

Listening to your favourite music is nothing like the rush you get from porn. You primitive brain isn't wired to listen to music. It's wired to reproduction and survival. I wouldn't worry about it.

Have you watched Gary Wilson's video on PIED?

Good luck with your reboot!  ;)
